For Brazilian theatre practitioner and street theatre pioneer, Augusto Boal, a non actor is the essence of truth in acting. Boal is famous for producing inclusive theatre, meaning that acting is open to everyone.
As Boal shares, “Many people come to me worried they are “non-actors.” In the view that Augusto Boal holds, calling someone a “non-actor”, is like calling someone a “non-breather”.
Boal believed that by acknowledging that we are all actors, we realise that we have the power to “act”, as in to (take action), to transform our reality.
